The Swiss final took place in Hausen AG for the first time this year. In the new multi-purpose hall, 43 teams with a total of 105 participants competed for the title of Swiss champions in their respective age groups and to qualify for the world finals in Dortmund in November.
The competition day was divided into two parts. In the morning, the teams showed what they had prepared over the past few months: The self-constructed robots had to navigate a course and solve a task known in advance. However, the distribution of the objects on the playing field was random; the robot had to recognize them and then carry out the correct actions. In the afternoon, two and a half hours of fast programming were required: completely new tasks were set on the familiar terrain. In addition to computer skills, good tactics were also important here: Recognizing which tasks were easiest to solve and scoring safe points was helpful here.
The design is also important
While the teams were working on their tasks, the jury for the DesignOvation Award was also on site. In addition to the appearance of the robot, they also paid attention to its functionality, effectiveness and precision, and the way it was programmed also had an influence on the evaluation. Another important factor was teamwork. One robot in the Elementary age group stood out in particular: It had two different pincers like a lobster to be able to grasp different objects; a gear (wheel) like a shark’s teeth, and a tail like a scorpion’s, which they could also use as a tool. The team deservedly won this award for creative robot design for this robot based on the animal world.
